Pumpkins are squash and also gourds. According the the Farmer's Almanac, Pumpkins are a fruit.  A fruit according to the dictionary is the usually edible reproductive body of a seed plant; one having a sweet pulp associated with the seed. 

Another interesting fact is that pumpkins aren't just for halloween and pumpkin pie.
